Why do some people learn more effectively than others? Why do some people who appear to have a happy childhood still suffer from behavioural and emotional difficulties? Why do some people find it easier to adjust to new situations than others? Welcome to the world of sensory integration. Impaired sensory integration affects learning and development as the individual is often unable to execute and handle the normal demands of everyday life. Sensory integration difficulties manifest as learning difficulties, emotional distress and behavioural problems. A professional dealing with children should therefore have knowledge on the process of sensory integration, how it manifests and how we can identify it. As educational psychologists, we have to intervene with learning difficulties and need to know how to assist children who present with sensory integration difficulties. We are in need of practical interventions that will allow the child to develop these skills in a playful, spontaneous manner. This book describes a research study that explored psychodrama as a possible intervention for a preschooler who presents with sensory integration difficulties.
