This report describes site characterization data, fertility evaluation (FCC) and soils management options for 90 soil profiles sampled in Kenya (Machakos,Kakamega, Malava, Kodera and Embu), Uganda (Bushenyi, Kalyengere, Kachwekano, Namulonge and Kabanyolo), Burundi (Karuzi and Gitega/Mashitsi) and Rwanda (Rubona, Ruhande, Gakuta and Rwerere)agroforestry research sites. Rainfall data are analyzed using gamma distribution and probabilities with long-term daily and monthly data. Soil chemical, biological, physical and mineralogical properties are variable and call for a site specific approach to soil management for their optimum use from low input to high input agriculture. Soils from EAC have a relatively low to medium fertility status. The main soil physical constraints are lack of moisture, shallow depth and subsoil hardening which is seen by the end of the dry season. Sloping lands call for an appropriate soil erosion control measures. The soil chemical constraints are a low capacity to retain and supply nutrients, aluminum toxicity for some research sites. Climatic variability is noticeable. This calls for a proper management for rainfall harvesting in all EAC region countries.
Dr Matungulu Kande Mutanda (Paul) holds a Ph.D. degree in soils science from North Carolina State University (USA). He has been working for over 2 decades as a researcher, a lecturer as well as a rural development and humanitarian worker in Africa and Asia. He was a post doctoral scientist with the International centre for research in Agroforestry.
