This book focuses on a unique concept constituting the most significant relation between architecture and literature: space. It builds on Norberg-Schulz´s theory of existential space which follows a phenomenological approach towards revealing the essence of space narrated in "The Black Book" by Orhan Pamuk. In the novel, the author gives new meaning to "spaces" that actually exist in the city of Istanbul. Most of the spaces narrated in the novel are based on places from his childhood. Pamuk´s use of his childhood environment as the story setting enables him to provide the reader with a vivid picture of a place. Space is the dominant structuring frame in "The Black Book" and Pamuk´s focus is not on studying portraits, but on the character´s movement through, and conflict with space, especially Istanbul.
