Housing, as a physical component, includes the dwellings, various community facilities and services such as water supply, drainage facilities, solid waste management, sanitation etc. Khulna is the third largest metropolis and a sprawling urban center and Khalishpur industrial belt is one of the largest industrial areas in Bangladesh. But the number of housing unit and quality of housing provided by the industry is poor. The income of the workers is small and they are irregularly paid. Because of financial hardship, these people are often forced to live in slums and squatter settlements in sub-human condition. This study has attempted to identify the industrial workers housing situation, existing socio-economic and physical condition of the houses and the existing services and facilities in the study area. At the same time this study also attempted to endorse some proposals and suggestions for improving the housing condition in the study area. This book, therefore, will be helpful for researcher working in the field like urban planning, housing studies, facility management, pollution control, living environment, low cost housing, slums and squatter development etc.
Md. Imtiaz Shahed, BURP at Khulna University, working as Programme Officer at Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Dhaka. His subjects of interest are Housing, Disaster Management & DRR and Urban & Rural Development Planning.
