Maternal, child health and health education are major concerns of public health organisations and researchers worldwide. Health education is a strategy that many countries have adopted to improve maternal and childhealth.Over half a million women encounter complications due to childbirth annually and many even die while others develop potential life threatening complications that are long standing in nature. This is a significant figure that cannot be ignored. There is need to adress this issue to save the lives of the many mothers of the nations. WHO contends that the immediate cause of maternal deaths is absence, inadequancy and underutilisation of healthcare systems, which can be addressed. Women should not die in childbirth because majority of the complications could be prevented if they had access to, or visited maternal health services during pregnancy, childbirth and even the first month after giving birth. These complications could be eliminated through preventive maternal healthcare services such as physiotherapy, family planning, health education, and screening. The author identifies a collective need to protect the mothers.
The author, Nankwanga Annet holds a PhD in physiotherapy from University of the Western Cape, South Africa and a Diploma in Medical Health Education from CEDHA.
