Semantic Analysis of Dholuo Nouns:A Semantic Field Approach investigates the semantic properties of Dholuo nouns to find out if their relationships are determined by these distinctive properties. The choice of nominal lexical items by the native speakers is considered a process of purposeful selection of only those nouns which are semantically related by virtue of belonging to a common field or whose semantic domains are related closely enough to allow for extension of meaning. Essentially, the theory of semantic field constrains the extent of word choice in normal ordinary discourse. The nouns are often subsumed under a general semantic domain with a lexicon which is a network of relationships whereby there is a connection between fields or domains such that some fields are mutually exclusive. The native speakers are intrinsically aware of this interface of relationships and, accordingly, use this knowledge to choose only the appropriate words in every context during discourse. This book will be useful to students of Linguistics and Linguistic anthropology, and researchers in cultural studies and communication.
Atoh,F.O. studied Linguistics at the University of Nairobi where he is currently a Lecturer and a doctoral researcher in the Department of Linguistics and Languages. He has published academic articles in semantics and discourse analysis with a bias on Dholuo language. Atoh is also a composer and arranger of African music.
