The German government changed the mechanism for selling electricity commissioned under the renewable energy sources act (EEG) from forced distribution to a market oriented selling in the day-ahead market, effective 1 January 2010. To understand the reasons and implications, a good working knowledge of the German electricity market and the electricity from renewable sources is important, which will be developed in this book. This book provides a good overview of the German electricity market, production, infrastructure, and working mechanisms. The renewable energy sources act is discussed along with the electricity commissioned under it. The renewable energy not EEG commissioned is also looked at briefly. The chapter on the AusglMechV, which is the ordinance demanding the change, discusses the new marketing mechanism along with statements of involved parties. The data evaluated for the first quarter of 2010, including prices, show that the transition went successfully and smoothly. The book is a good read for anyone interested in the dynamics and working mechanisms of the German electricity market, EEG electricity, or the Equalization Mechanism Ordinance (AusglMechV).
