Against the background of an ongoing demand on faster, more cost-effective and more sensitive analysis methods particularly in the area of forensic DNA analysis, innovative and sophisticated technologies are necessary. In this work a multifunctional lab-on-a-chip device is presented that is capable of performing reliable, reproducible and highly sensitive DNA analyses even if applied to a wide variety of small-scale forensic relevant sample materials. The reported high fashion lab-on-a-chip technology represents a fascinating starting point to optimize and even revolutionize forensic research by superseding old-fashioned, bulky, costly and time-consuming standard laboratory operating procedures that are still in use so far.
