The inter-war period between 1918 and 1939 is often perceived as merely an interval between the two great
wars. In fact, it was an era of transition. During and after World War I political and social circumstances which had been prevalent in the pre-war period changed completely. Additionally, a period of economical boom was followed by an international financial and economic crisis. As one consequence, people all over Europe, feeling deeply insecure about their future, turned to extremist ideologies and their leaders.
