1927 überquerte Charles Lindbergh im Alleinflug den Atlantik, und noch im selben Jahr brachte die Firma J.M.L. eine Spielzeugversion der Spirit of St. Louis auf den Markt. Als Vorlage für solche Flieger aus Weiß- und Eisenblech dienten unscharfe Schwarz-Weiß-Fotos, also erlaubten sich die Spielzeughersteller der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts künstlerische Freiheiten. Die Doppeldecker und Propellermaschinen von Märklin, Tipp & Co, Distler, Günthermann, Rossignol, Joustra, INGAP, Paya oder Rico waren bunt bedruckt und nahmen es mit den technischen Details nicht ganz genau. Es entstanden wahre Meisterwerke naiver Gestaltungskraft, die der umfassende Katalog in Wort und Bild präzise vorstellt: neben den Langstrecken- und Rekordfliegern auch Wasserflugzeuge, Militärmaschinen, Autogiros, die Vorläufer der Hubschrauber sowie Karussells und anderes Flugspielzeug.
