Das Werk von Niko Luoma (geb.1970 in Helsinki) stellt eine der ungewöhnlichsten Positionen innerhalb der zeitgenössischen finnischen Fotografie dar. Seine faszinierenden abstrakten Kompositionen bearbeitet er nicht etwa digital sie entstehen rein analog, allein durch Mehrfachbelichtung. Luomas Thema und Material ist das Licht, formal interessiert ihn das Prozesshafte, die Wiederholung, das Fortgesetzte. Inspiriert von Mathematik und Geometrie kreiert Luoma aus den Spuren des Lichts Bilder von gewaltiger Strahlkraft.
An den meisten seiner erstaunlich unterschiedlichen Serien arbeitet der Künstler bereits seit Jahren: In Symmetrium etwa bilden Tausende von Einzelbelichtungen ein einziges Negativ, in Kairos bilden Zeichnungen von Motiven, die für ihn jenen aristotelisch "richtigen Augenblick" verkörpern, die Basis für Strukturen, in denen Luomas das Ephemere in die Ewigkeit zu überführen sucht.
