Sie bieten Schutz, sie führen zu Kriegen, sie beschränken Freiheit oder machen Freiheit erst möglich, sie waren immer da, und es wird sie weiterhin geben: Grenzen. Kaum etwas anderes ist gesellschaftlich so ambivalent aufgeladen, so zeitlos und zugleich äußerst relevant. Als mit der Berliner Mauer die wahrscheinlich bedeutendste Grenze in der Geschichte Deutschlands verschwand, gründete sich die Agentur Ostkreuz. Zwei Jahrzehnte später haben sich die Fotografen der Agentur auf die Suche nach heutigen Grenzen gemacht. Ihre Bilder erzählen vom Finden einer staatlichen Identität in Tschetschenien und dem Südsudan, porträtieren indigene Völkergruppen, die in Kanada um ihr Land kämpfen und palästinensische Schwule, die im Feindesland Israel Exil suchen. Im Fokus stehen immer die Menschen: Wie prägen Grenzen ihren Alltag und wie gestalten sie ihr Leben entlang der Grenzen, die sie umgeben?

Hardly anything else is as socially ambivalent, as timeless, and simultaneously as extremely relevant. The Ostkreuz agency was founded when what was probably the most important border in the history of Germanythe Berlin Walldisappeared. Two decades later, the agencys photographers set out on a search for todays frontiers. Their pictures tell of discovering a state identity in South Sudan; they portray groups of indigenous peoples battling for their land in Canada and gay people in Palestine seeking exile in the enemy country of Israel. The focus is always on people: how do boundaries influence their everyday lives, and how do they shape their lives along those that surround them?
