Während seiner 46-jährigen Herrschaft verfolgte Friedrich II. von Preußen die Verschönerung Potsdams mit großer Zielstrebigkeit, gründete dafür Manufakturen, engagierte Künstler und Handwerker aus dem In- und Ausland und ließ durch Agenten überall auf dem europäischen Markt Kunstwerke ankaufen. Lebenslang beschäftigte er sich mit Fragen der Architektur, suchte nach Vorbildern in Frankreich, Italien und England und ließ einiges davon in verkleinertem Maßstab in Potsdam wiedererstehen. Kaum ein anderer Ort Europas wurde von einem einzigen Herrscher in so kurzer Zeit so grundlegend nach persönlichen Vorstellungen verändert, und kaum eine andere Stadt Europas wird in ihrer Wahrnehmung bis auf den heutigen Tag so sehr mit einem einzigen Namen verbunden. Auf dem neuesten Forschungsstand und anhand von über 150 Objekten, darunter Gemälde, Möbel und Seiden, beleuchtet das Ausstellungsbuch die Erfindung einer Stadt, mit ihren Errungenschaften wie Nachteilen.

No other city in Europe was so fundamentally changed to suit the individual ideas of a single ruler in such a short time.
