In the manifesto The City in the City - Berlin: A Green Archipelago, Oswald Mathias Ungers and a number of his colleagues from Cornell University presented the first concepts and intellectual models for the shrinking city. In contrast to the reconstruction of the European city that was popular at the time, they developed the figure of a polycentric urban landscape. However, the manifesto really began to exert an effect beginning in the 1990s onwards, when the focus of the urban planning discourse turned to the examination of crises, recessions, and the phenomenon of demographic shrinking. This critical edition contains a previously unpublished version of the manifesto by Rem Koolhaas, as well as interviews with co-authors Rem Koolhaas, Peter Riemann, Hans Kollhoff, and Arthur Ovaska. Introductory texts explain the development of the manifesto between Cornell and Berlin, position the work in the planning history of Berlin, and reveal its influence on current approaches. FLORIAN HERTWECK, born in Bonn in 1975, is associate professor for architectural design, architectural theory, and urban planning in Versailles, and an associate in the planning office Hertweck Devernois. SEBASTIEN MAROT, born in Paris, France, in 1961, is founding member of the "Ecole d´architecture de la ville et des territoires Marne-la-Vallée" and visiting professor at numerous universities including the ETH Zürich and Harvard.

La ville dans la ville - Berlin: un archipel vert (1977) est l´un des plus étonnants manifestes urbains de la fin du XXe siècle. Con‡u par Oswald Mathias Ungers et Rem Koolhaas, avec la collaboration de Peter Riemann, Hans Kollhoff et Arthur Ovaska, ce projet fut le premier à introduire la notion d´archipel dans la sphère de l´urbanisme, et à endosser le phénomène contemporain de la décroissance des villes. Mais en dépit de sa force et de son originalité - et d´une espèce de renommée mythique - qui en font un proche parent de Collage City ou de New York délire, ce texte est passé relativement inaper‡u pendant trente-cinq ans, alors même que sa pertinence ne faisait qu´augmenter. L´ambition de cette réédition critique, qui comprend un fac-similé du manifeste original et de nombreux documents jamais publiés, est d´éclairer les conditions de sa genèse et, surtout, de le remettre à l´ordre du jour des débats sur le futur des villes et des territoires.

O. M. Ungers wurde 1926 in Kaisersesch/Eifel geboren. Seine Lehre (Berlin, Cornell), seine theoretischen Beiträge, seine weltweit veröffentlichten und diskutierten Projekte und Bauten - unter ihnen die frühen Wohnbauten in Köln, das Deutsche Architekturmuseum und die Messebauten in Frankfurt am Main, das Polarinstitut in Bremerhaven oder die Residenz des deutschen Botschafters in Washington - sowie seine engagierte Teilnahme an Debatten zur Architektur und Stadt haben ihn wohl zum bekanntesten deutschen Architekten der Gegenwart werden lassen.

Florian Hertweck studierte Architektur, Architekturtheorie und Architekturgeschichte. 2007 Promotion. 200609 lehrte er Architekturentwurf und -theorie in Paris, seitdem in Versailles. Forschung zu Metropolenprojekten am Institut LIAT. Leitung eines Stadtplanungs- und Architekturbüros in Remagen und Paris.

Rem Koolhaas founded the architectural firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in 1975 together with Madelon Vriesedorp, Elia Zenghelis, and Zorp Zenghelis. Before training as an architect, he worked as a journalist and advertising copywriter.
