Peter Linke, Meeresbiologe am GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel, hat den Sonderforschungsbereich 574, von dem das Buch handelt, von Beginn an begleitet.
Die Designerin Birte Friedländer entwickelte gemeinsam mit dem Fotografen Bernd Grundmann das Konzept: Großformatige Fotos der Expeditionen und erklärende Grafiken werden durch Interviews mit den beteiligten Forschern ergänzt.
Diese führte die Journalistin und Dokumentarfilmerin Sarah Zierul ( Der Kampf um die Tiefsee ). In ihren Kurztexten und Gesprächen lässt sie die Reisen der Wissenschaftler Revue passieren.
