This works creates new insights into the dilemma successive governments encountered in trying to fashion educational policies that are relevant to the needs of SVG. Britain applied blanket policies for its entire Caribbean colonies; creating more problems than solutions they left the islands with an unseeingly insoluble dilemma. Education policies were somewhat varied. Initially there was none; however, over time some policy began to take shape in the form of churches or denominational inputs followed by recommendations of various commissions which were sent out by Britain to investigate conditions in the islands. Successive governments have contributed to the advancement of education in different ways. They erected schools, expanded tertiary education through loans and scholarships leading to significant increse in qualified citizens. This led to the brain drain due to lack of opportunities and competition for scarce jobs. Hence, education for export has become a more realistic goal, with the hope that some benefit in the form of remittances will be accrued; thereby contributing to indirect national development.
