Sherlock Holmes remains one of the most celebrated characters ever created. As probably the most famous detective, his importance as a cultural icon is indisputable. This book in particular demonstrates his influence in regard to Victorian masculinity. The first part gives insight into the social circumstances which made it possible for a detective figure to emerge in literature, such as crime and social disorder, and also information on Holmes s predecessors and the methods which paved the way for the upcoming symbol of detection. The second part contains the focal point, the in-depth presentation of the Victorian ideals concerning masculinity and how this concept is in close relation with the idea of reestablishing order through heroic behavior. Here the Victorian ideals of proper masculinity, heroism and order restoration are dealt with, and Holmes s character is represented in details as a representative of (moral) law and justice and as a protector of his society. The emphasis is on five clusters crucial for interpreting Holmes as a real man and a hero, which at the same time are the main aspects of the Victorian philosophy of masculinity and heroism.
