Due to the immediate energy shortage and the requirement of environment protection, the efficient, effective and environmental friendly use of current energy sources is urgent. Energy conversion and storage is thus an important focus both for industry and academia. As one of the hydrogen energy related materials, proton conducting ceramics can be applied in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and steam electrolysers, as well as high temperature H2 separation membranes and H2 sensors. For most of the practical applications, both high proton conductivity and chemical stability are desirable. However, the state-of-the-art proton conductors are facing great challenges in simultaneously fulfilling the requirements for practical applications. Understanding the properties for the proton conductors and developing novel materials that possess both high proton conductivity and enhanced chemical stability have thus both scientific and practical significances. In this book, several novel proton conducting ceramics are introduced and developed. Their structure and the effects on the electrical properties as well as SOFC application of the proton conducting ceramics have been demonstrated.
Dr. Siwei Wang is an expert in proton conducting ceramics. His research areas include energy conversion and storage materials, including solid state defect chemistry study, high temperature solid oxide fuel cells, intermediate temperature proton conducting fuel cells, molten carbonate fuel cells, and gas separation membranes.
