Eine große Betonplatte steht im Zentrum des chilenischen Pavillons: Es handelt sich um eines der ersten originalen Wandelemente, die von der chilenischen KPD-Fabrik für den massenhaften Wohnungsbau gefertigt wurden. Die Industrieanlage für die Produktion von Fertighäusern war 1971 von der Sowjetunion gestiftet worden, um den von Präsident Salvador Allende eingeschlagenen "demokratischen Weg zum Sozialismus" zu unterstützen. Die ausgestellte Platte löste politische und ideologische Kontroversen aus,
insbesondere nachdem Allende in einer Geste der Macht seine Unterschrift in den feuchten Beton eingraviert hatte und diese durch Diktator Augusto Pinochet wieder mit Altar aus Jungfrau und Kind nebst kolonialen Laternenleuchten überdeckt wurde. Der Band zeichnet die Geschichte dieser Platte anhand authentischer Stimmen, etwa von ehemaligen KPD-Arbeitern oder Bewohnern der Fertighäuser, nach und leistet einen fundamentalen Beitrag zum Ausstellungsthema Absorbing Modernity 1914 2014.

A large concrete panel is the centerpiece of the Chilean Pavilion. It was one of the first original wall panels produced by the Chilean KPD plant. Donated in 1971 by the Soviet Union to support president Salvador Allendes Democratic Road to Socialism, the factory complex produced prefabricated housing components. This panel has since been the subject of several political and ideological controversies. Allende himself signed the wet concrete, only for his gesture to be later covered over by Augusto Pinochet, who hid it beneath a representation of the Virgin and Child framed by two colonial lamp fixtures. By bringing together the voices of former KPD workers, inhabitants of housing built with these elements, and invited authors, this book tells the history of this panel, thus making a fundamental contribution to the exhibition theme Absorbing Modernity 19142014.
