Pierre Loti (1850-1923) was a French naval officer and novelist. The present book is one of his few works of non-fiction, a small collection of letters and diary entries that describe his views and experiences in the wars and military operations in which he participated.

Pierre Loti (eigentlich Julien Viaud, 1850-1923) war Marineoffizier. Reisen nach Nord- und Südamerika, Tahiti, Tongking (Teilnahme am Boxerkrieg), Indien, China und Japan. Er veröffentlichte seit 1879 Romane, Erzählungen, einige Dramen und Reiseberichte.
