Marie Rutkoski wuchs als ältestes von vier Geschwistern in Bolingbrook, Illinois, in der Nähe von Chicago auf. Sie studierte Englische und Amerikanische Literaturgeschichte und verbrachte nach ihrem Abschluss ein Jahr in Moskau und Prag. Heute lebt sie mit ihrem Mann in New York und arbeitet als Dozentin für Literatur und Geschichte an der Brooklyn University.
