The authors and creators of Internet never had security in mind before the Internet was created, as the Internet was intended mainly for research purposes only. Today with more than 2.9 billion active users, the need for security over the Internet has increased drastically. The advent of the OpenSSL library brought a lot of hopes to the Internet community as it provided a standard mechanism for securing the communication between different parties. As a result, OpenSSL was adopted widely and used by almost every Internet user from local users, to Government agencies, Organizations, Institutions, Banks and etc for securing communications. These hopes all fell apart in April 2014 when a bug was discovered in the OpenSSL software. This Bug gave/gives the ability to attackers (Internet hackers) to virtually grab the most sensitive information contained in a computer´s running memory, and hence exposing huge amounts of user sensitive data. How did this happen? and who was and was not affected by this bug? Was this a Bug created by Government Agencies (NSA and GCHQ) to maintain Internet under their control?.
Heartbleed Bug - The OpenSSL Vulnerability - provides a detail understanding of the greatest security vulnerability that has hit the Internet since its existence.Mbah J. Fortem B.Sc, M.Sc and currently a PhD student at Walden University, is a Internet security enthusiast, writer and is presently working as System Administrator and Security Auditor
