Oral medicine is the speciality of dentistry that is concerned with the oral health care of medically compromised patients and with the diagnosis and nonsurgical management of medically related disorders or conditions affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. Oral medicine specialists are concerned with the nonsurgical medical aspects of dentistry. These specialists are involved in the primary diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases that do not respond to conventional dental or maxillofacial surgical procedures. The success of medical consultation depends not only on the doctor´s clinical knowledge and interview skills, but also on the nature of the relationship that exists between the doctor and the patient. An accurate history also provides focus to the physical examination, making it more productive and time efficient. Clinical hypotheses generated during the interview provide the basis for a cost-effective utilization of clinical laboratory investigations and other diagnostic modalities.
