The National Transport Safety Authority was established in 2012 with the goal of promoting road safety. The objective of forming the Authority was to harmonize the operations of the key road transport departments and help in effectively managing the road transport sub-sector and minimizing loss of lives through road accidents. Its Vision is to ensure sustainable and safe road transport system with zero crashes and its mission is to facilitate the provision of safe, reliable, efficient road transport services. However, development and implementation of road safety strategies that do not pay serious attention to pedestrians and public transport vehicles will not result in real improvement in road safety. The problem of pedestrians is much more pronounced in urban areas like Nakuru where almost 70% of traffic deaths are pedestrians. Cyclists have clogged the roads and now constitute a significant share of urban mobility.
