Der amerikanische Kunstkritiker Arthur Danto (1924-2013) ging zeitlebens der Frage nach, was das Wesen der Kunst sei. Beeinflusst von Nietzsche, Hegel und Schopenhauer befasste er sich mit repräsentationstheoretischen Themen, prägte den Begriff der "Kunstwelt" und postulierte das Ende der tradierten Kunst. Ein besonderes Interesse des Kunstphilosophen galt der New York School, dem Abstrakten Expressionismus. Das hoch geschätzte Werk seines Freundes Sean Scully sah er als dessen Fortsetzung und Weiterentwicklung: " Scullys historische Bedeutung liegt in seiner Überführung der großen Errungenschaften des Abstrakten Expressionismus in die Gegenwart." Den abstrakten Streifenbildern des irischen Künstlers (geb. 1945 in Dublin) widmete Danto eine Reihe von Aufsätzen. Die bibliophile Publikation versammelt Dantos Essays zu Scullys Oeuvre erstmals in einem Band und begleitet die Texte mit ausgewählten Illustrationen Gemälden, Fotografien und Zeichnungen des Malers.

The American art critic Arthur Danto (19242013) spent his entire life in pursuit of the essence of art. Influenced by Nietzsche, Hegel, and Schopenhauer, he concerned himself with issues related to representation theory, coined the term art world, and posited the end of traditional art. One of the art philosophers primary interests was the New York SchoolAbstract Expressionism. He considered the highly esteemed oeuvre of his friend Sean Scully to be its continuation and further development. Scullys historical importance lies in the way he has brought the great achievement of Abstract Expressionist painting into the contemporary moment. Danto devoted a series of essays to the abstract stripe paintings by the Irish artist ( 1945 in Dublin). The bibliophile publication assembles Dantos essays on Scullys body of work for the time in one volume, and combines them with select illustrationspaintings, photographs, and drawings by the painter.

Arthur C. Danto, geboren 1924 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, war Philosoph und Kunstkritiker. Danto lehrte seit 1951 bis zu seiner Emeritierung an der Columbia University in New York. Er ist am 25. Oktober 2013 im Alter von 89 Jahren gestorben.
