Die Begleitpublikation zum offiziellen Beitrag Portugals zur 56. Biennale von Venedig gewährt einen Einblick in die gegenwärtige künstlerische Praxis von JoÆo Louro (geb.1963 in Lissabon). Seit den 1990er-Jahren konzentriert er sich in seinem Werk darauf, sowohl die Bedeutung des Bildes als Objekt beziehungsweise Zeichen als auch die der Sprache als symbolische Repräsentation zu hinterfragen. Louro ist ein hochgradig konzeptioneller Künstler, eine Konzentration, die in seiner Präsentation und Interpretation der Welt greifbar wird. Einen besonderen Schwerpunkt legt sein uvre darauf, neue semantische Bezüge herzustellen und Zweifel an der Richtigkeit akzeptierter visueller Normen zu wecken.

Texte von María de Corral, Paulo Herkenhoff, Delfim Sardo und Nuno Crespo, die mit JoÆo Louros Werk seit langem vertraut sind, werden von einem Querschnitt durch JoÆo Louros künstlerischer Produktion begleitet, sowie von einigen Arbeiten, die eigens für die Biennale entstanden sind.

The book produced to accompany the presence of JoÆo Louro ( 1963 in Lisbon) as the official representative of Portugal at the 56th Venice Biennale with the exhibition I Will Be Your MirrorPoems and Problems is presented as the state of the art of Louros oeuvre, which, since the nineties, has developed a well-informed questioning of the meaning of the image as an object or sign and of language as a symbolic representation. Louro is an intensely conceptual artist, one whose intensity is demonstrated in his presentation and interpretation of the world. He is interested in generating new semantic aspects and raising doubts about norms accepted by our visual culture.The texts by María de Corral, Paulo Herkenhoff, Delfim Sardo, and Nuno Crespo, authors who have a deep knowledge of JoÆo Louros work, are accompanied by images that show us the overall body of JoÆo Louro´s production, including some works produced specifically for this exhibition.
