Performances, Videofilme und Installationen stehen bereits seit den 1960er-Jahren im Mittelpunkt der Kunst von Joan Jonas. Die amerikanische Künstlerin ist damit eine der wichtigsten Wegbereiterinnen dieser erst in den 1990er-Jahren verstärkt angewendeten Kunstformen. They Come to Us without A Word wurde von Miko McGinty in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Joan Jonas gestaltet und stellt umfangreiche Installationsansichten im Pavillon der USA auf der Biennale von Venedig 2105 vor, die Jonas selbst ausgewählt und zusammengestellt hat. Die Künstlerin sieht in diesen Bildern nicht nur eine Dokumentation ihrer anspruchsvollen und bedeutenden Arbeit, sondern vielmehr einen integralen Bestandteil der Präsentation und der Erlebens von They Come to Us without A Word. Der Band umfasst neben grundlegenden neuen Essays von Ann Reynolds und Marina Warner ein Interview mit der Künstlerin, das Ingrid Schaffner geführt hat.

Performances, videos and installationsthe American artist Joan Jonas belongs among the most influential pioneers in these genres. Newly popular in the nineties, these art forms have formed the core of her work since the sixties. They Come to Us without A Word, designed by Miko McGinty in close collaboration with Joan Jonas, features an extensive series of images of the U.S. Pavilion installation at the Venice Biennale 2015 selected by Jonas. Jonas views these images not only as documents of an ambitious and important new work, but as an integral part of the presentation and experience of They Come to Us without A Word. The book also includes major new essays by Ann Reynolds and Marina Warner as well as an interview with Jonas conducted by Ingrid Schaffner. Joan Jonas, geboren 1936 in New York, ist Künstlerin und Dozentin. Ihr Werk umfasst Performances, Videos, Installationen, Skulpturen und Zeichnungen. Sie lebt überwiegend in New York.

Ingrid Schaffner ist Chefkuratorin am Institute of Contemporary Art an der University of Pennsylvania.
