Neben seinen stilbildenden Porträts, Partybildern und Stillleben, mit denen er in den 1990er-Jahren bekannt wurde, haben Wolfgang Tillmans (geb.1968 in Remscheid) schon früh abstraktere Motive beschäftigt. In konsequenter Weiterentwicklung entstanden im vergangenen Jahrzehnt vollkommen ungegenständliche, Belichtungsprozess und Bildträger thematisierende Arbeiten. Von den feinen Farbschlieren der Blushes und Freischwimmer über die Paper Drops, die gerolltes Fotopapier als skulpturales, geheimnisvolles Objekt präsentieren, bis zu den farblich fesselnden Arbeiten der Lighter-Serie wird das der Abbildfunktion weitestgehend enthobene Foto selbst zum Kunstobjekt, wie das vorliegende, vom Künstler selbst gestaltete Buch eindrucksvoll demonstriert. Apart from his seminal portraits, party images, and still lifes that gained him recognition in the nineties, Wolfgang Tillmans ( 1968 in Remscheid) long ago began dealing with more abstract motifs. In the past decade he has consistently developed his approach to create totally non-representational works that examine themes such as the process of exposure and image supports. From the delicate veils of color in Blushes and Freischwimmer or the sculptural paper drops made of rolled-up photographic paper, to the colorfully compelling works of the Lighter series, the photograph itselfessentially divorced from its reproductive functionbecomes the objet dart, as the book here, designed by the artist himself, impressively demonstrates.
