Modern Indian literature is being written in 24 major languages that have been recognized in the Indian Constitution as official languages. English has a special status of "associate official language". Though Indian literature today is known outside the country mainly through its literature written in English - the so-called Indian-English literature - the literature written in other Indian languages is not less fertile and productive both in respect of its quantitative output as well as in its literary quality. So far, the history of the reception of modern Indian literature in the German-speaking countries has not been researched. This study intends to fill this gap.
