Acht Städte, neun Museen und rund 70 Künstler verbinden sich zu einem einzigartigen Kunstevent, in dessen Fokus die zeitgenössische Kunst Chinas steht. Mehrere Museen aus dem Rhein- Ruhr-Gebiet setzen dabei jeweils einen eigenen thematischen Schwerpunkt. Exponate aus den Bereichen Malerei, Zeichnung, Kalligrafie, Skulptur, Installation und Video ermöglichen einen umfassenden Überblick über die aktuelle Kunst aus China. Namhafte Künstler wie Ai Weiwei und Sui Jianguo sind dabei ebenso vertreten wie jüngere und neue Positionen. Die Acht im Titel der Übersichtsschau steht nicht nur für die Anzahl der beteiligten Städte, sondern ist auch eine bedeutende chinesische Glückszahl, die mit bevorstehendem Reichtum assoziiert wird.
