Unter den Leitbegriffen ´Pluralisierung´ und ´Autorität´ präsentiert die Reihe Studien (des Münchner Sonderforschungsbereichs 573) zur Frühen Neuzeit vom 15. bis 17. Jahrhundert. Zunehmend erkennen die Kulturwissenschaften die Frühe Neuzeit als eine Epoche, die einerseits noch von den Traditionsvorgaben des Mittelalters abhängig ist, andererseits aber die Voraussetzungen für den Übergang ´Alteuropas´ zur Moderne schafft. Die interdisziplinär angelegte Reihe erkundet in literatur- und sprachwissenschaftlicher, historischer, philosophischer, kunst-, musik- und rechtsgeschichtlicher Perspektive diese grundlegende Dynamik der Epoche.

Die frühneuzeitliche Rezeption klassischer Mythen in Text und Bild beförderte nicht nur eine Vielzahl von Deutungsmustern und Bildtraditionen, sondern provozierte zugleich bildliche und literarische Gegenreaktionen in Form neuartiger und komischer Mythenadaptionen. Der Witz dieser ikonographischen Verfremdungen hinterfragt sowohl die durch den Mythos vermittelten Sinngehalte als auch die aus der Antike herstammenden Verfahren der Mythenallegorese sowie die den antiken Vorbildern zugemessene Autorität. Die Studie kontextualisiert erstmals "launige" Götterbilder aus der italienischen und nordalpinen Profanmalerei und Druckgraphik im Rahmen größerer Motivkomplexe sowie dichtungs- und kunsttheoretischer Diskurse.

Under the guiding concepts ´pluralization´ and ´authority´, the series presents studies [of the Munich Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 573] on the Early Modern Age from the 15th to the 17th century. Increasingly, the cultural sciences recognize the Early Modern Age as an epoch that was dependent on the exigencies of medieval tradition, but at the same time created the preconditions for the transition of ´Old Europe´ to the Modern Age. In contrast to the established historical grand narratives of modernization, secularization and progress, the dynamics of the epoch is conceived in the volumes of the series as complex, mutually competing world views, knowledge resources, norms and behavior patterns showing no clear direction. This interdisciplinary series explores the fundamental dynamics of this epoch from the perspectives of literature and linguistics, history, philosophy, and art, music and legal history.

Based on the key concepts of pluralization´ and authority´, the series presents studies on early modern literature and culture from the 15th to the 17th century. The early modern period is increasingly recognized in cultural studies as an age whose cultural paradigms still largely depended on medieval norms and traditions but at the same time also created a set of conditions that facilitated Europe´s transition to modernity. As opposed to established historical grand narratives such as modernization or secularization, the volumes in this series attempt to describe the dynamics of the period as a complex interaction of mutually competing world views, knowledge structures and behaviour patterns. The series explores these dynamics from an interdisciplinary perspective, including studies on literature, linguistics, history, philosophy, art, music and legal history.
