Papyrus Princeton Pharaonic Roll 10 is a hieratic 22-page manuscript containing an original and coherent depiction, in rubrics alternating with spells to be recited, of the performance of a ritual originating from the cult of Osiris. First, a procession involving the figure of Osiris is described, followed by the account of a journey on a bark. Integrated destructive rituals against enemies, offerings and glorifications are also comprised.
The beginning of the papyrus is lost to an unknown extent, which is why its specific context is beyond our knowledge. Of the extant texts, some are attested by other sources on papyrus or monuments (Book of the New Moon, Offering Ritual, Ritual of the Opening of the Mouth, etc.); to them, Papyrus Princeton Pharaonic Roll 10 offers a further parallel. Other texts are partially or entirely new. Some of them were adapted on behalf of two individuals. In most cases, the second personal name replaces the first in a structured scheme.
Sandrine Vuilleumier presents the first edition of this remarkable manuscript unrolled in the Princeton University Library in 1998. After the description of the papyrus and the corrections made to its mounting, its paleography and its owners are discussed. The main sections present the transcriptions, translations and commentaries of each part of the text. A last chapter is dedicated to the contents and sequences of the ritual, analyzing various aspects of the document as the textual source and as a religious testimony. The edition is complemented by a continued translation and a glossary as well as color photographs of the manuscript.
The book is written in French.
