Robert Havemann zählt zweifelsohne zu den bedeutendsten DDR-Dissidenten. Als Kommunist war er vom Volksgerichtshof 1943 zum Tode verurteilt worden, als Kommunist beteiligte er sich führend am Aufbau der DDR. Angetrieben wurde Havemann dabei vom Ideal der Überwindung sozialer und politischer Knechtschaft, das ihn schließlich zum Gegner seiner ehemaligen Genossen werden ließ. Seine schonungslose Kritik am SED-Regime ging nicht zuletzt auf seine im Widerstand gegen das NS-Regime gewachsene Haltung zurück.Der Band vereint Studien zu entscheidenden Wendepunkten der Biografie Havemanns und Untersuchungen zu seiner Bedeutung in historischen Umbrüchen. Die Aufsätze werden ergänzt durch biografische Schlüsseldokumente aus dem Nachlass Havemanns im Archiv der Robert-Havemann-Gesellschaft Berlin und die Stasiberichte über Havemanns aufsehenerregende Vorlesungen an Spitzenfunktionäre der SED 1964.

This volume contains analyses and previously unpublished documents concerning Robert Havemann and his evolution to becoming an opponent of the SED regime.
No other intellectual in the GDR was such a harsh opponent of the SED regime as Robert Havemann. A Communist and a Nazi resistance fighter through and through, Havemann was one of the leaders in erecting the new GDR. His advocacy against all forms of social and political subjugation, however, eventually turned him into an opponent of the reigning regime of the GDR. The contributions in this volume illuminate his development and look at his role in the historical shifts that took place in East Germany. The articles are complemented by the publication of important documents from his estate and the Stasi reports on his spectacular lectures held in 1964.

Essays and yet unpublished documents on both the biography and the impact of most important East German dissident Robert Havemann. The chemist Havemann who was sentenced to death for his underground fighting against the Nazi rule in 1943, became a prominent East German communist celebrity in the 1950s. Since his criticism of the rule of his own party, insisting on the central objectives of labor movement to overcome social and political injustice, he became one of the most influential dissidents.
