Julian Barnes is famous for his skillful use of irony, both as a tool and as a framework for reconsidering old stories and adding new perspectives to an existing range of interpretations. Hidden behind the mask of irony, Barnes has the freedom to adopt new perspectives when looking at the age-old themes of love, representation of truth and our relationship with history. Irony contributes to maintaining a fragmented and dissipated image, and eliminates any real possibility of reaching a conclusion. Starting from an analysis of Julian Barnes´s novels, this book aims to contribute to a reconsideration of irony within the context of postmodernity.

Dr Daniela Oancea gained her degrees in modern languages and translation studies from "Al. I. Cuza" University in Iasi and the University of Bucharest. She did her doctoral research at the University of Salamanca and she completed her PhD in 2011 with a thesis on irony in Julian Barnes´s novels. At present she lives in the United Kingdom.
