The aim of this book is to shed light on the place of communists and their contribution to the local politics of Nellore district. The local level offers many possibilities for participation in politics from local associations and groups to formal political organizations. However it includes not only the study of the Communist Party-its origins, growth, ideology, policies, programmes, electoral participation and performance-but also its role and impact on the socio-economic, cultural and literary spheres. The title "The Role of the Communists in Nellore District during the Pre and Post Independent era" instead of Communist Party and its policies in Nellore district is deliberately chosen because the Communist Party in Nellore District in particular that of in Andhra Pradesh in general is more than a political party. Its historical origin and growth are blended with the nationalist movement in the district. It is a movement, because the work of the Communist Party is not confined to political activities only. Historically speaking, Communist Party´s activities in the state and the district spread to political, social, economic, ideological, cultural and literary fields.
