The Jewish Museum in Berlin is devoting a large retrospective to the NO!art artist Boris Lurie. His collages confront the viewer with the experience of persecution and imprisonment in camps during the Nazi era. Lurie combines disgust for people who were capable of persecuting and mass-murdering millions with revulsion toward a smug art market that is more interested in financial gain than in artistic statements. His drawings, on the other hand, take another tone. Here, the artist creates poetic images of his time.
Brief biography: Born in 1924 in Leningrad; raised in Riga. He and his father survived the concentration camps in Stutthof and Buchenwald. His mother, grandmother, younger sister, and early love were executed in 1941 in a mass shooting. 1946: emigrated to New York. 1959: co-founder of the NO!art movement, which opposed Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and, above all, the commodification of art, while devoting itself to political themes, such as racism, sexism, and consumer culture. Boris Lurie died on January 7, 2008, in New York.
