Paul Watson, born in Toronto, Canada, is an activist who has dedicated his life to marine protection. In 1972, Watson co-founded the environmental organization Greenpeace. However, his direct action approach differed so much from the non-violent peaceful guidelines of Greenpeace that, in 1977, he founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a direct-action group dedicated to combating poaching and to preserving the oceans. In 1993, he published ¯Earth Force! An Earth Warrior´s Guide to Strategy® with guidelines for an effective environmental strategy. This was followed in 1995 by ¯Ocean Warrior: My Battle to End the Illegal Slaughter on the High Seas®. In 2012, Paul Watson, the "environmental activist and adventurer" was awarded the "Jules Verne Award", following in the footsteps of Jacques Cousteau. His activism has involved him in legal complications with some countries, costing him some degree of freedom. He has lived in France since 2013.
