Stadt und Landschaft - diese Begriffe bilden im allgemeinen Verständnis ein Gegensatzpaar. Das Urbane mit seinen gebauten Räumen und Plätzen wird von der Natur mit ihren gewachsenen Landschaften und Lichtungen abgrenzt. Doch die Landschaftsarchitektur der Gegenwart untersucht beides als ein System und macht die vermeintlich gegenläufigen Entwicklungen in ihrer gegenseitigen Abhängigkeit sichtbar. Angesichts massiver Veränderungen ökologischer Systeme, aber auch zunehmender Migration und der Ausbreitung ungeplanter Siedlungen steht auch die Landschaftsarchitektur vor globalen Herausforderungen. Der Katalog versteht sich als ein Plädoyer für eine neue Standortbestimmung der Disziplin. Anhand von konkreten Projekten aus aller Welt werden innovative und zugleich komplexe Ansätze präsentiert. Landschaftsarchitektur von heute widmet sich jenen räumlichen Systemen, die die Gesellschaft von morgen prägen werden.

City and countrythese terms are generally regarded as opposites. The urban, with its constructed spaces and places, is separated from nature, with its mature landscapes and clearings. Yet, todays landscape architecture explores both of them as a single system, making it possible to see the mutual dependency of these supposedly opposing developments. In view of massive changes in ecological systems, as well as increasing migration and the spread of unplanned human settlements, landscape architecture is also being confronted with global challenges. This catalogue is a plea to redefine the disciplines position. Innovative but complex approaches are presented in examples of specific projects from all over the world. Landscape architecture today commits itself to the spatial systems that will shape tomorrows society.
