Großer Überblick der indischen Künstlerikone

Die indische Künstlerin Nalini Malani gilt als Pionierin in Film, Fotografie, Videokunst und Performance, die die moderne und die zeitgenössische Kunst ihres Landes miteinander verbindet. Ihre Arbeiten setzen sich kritisch mit der politischen Situation in Indien auseinander und bedienen sich neben westlichen Traditionen in Kunst und Literatur auch einer typisch indischen Ikonografie. Das Centre Pompidou zeigt nun die erste Retrospektive von Nalini Malani. Die Ausstellung sowie der Katalog decken mit Werken von 1969-2017 fast fünf Jahrzehnte ihres Schaffens ab. Zu diesem Anlass belebt die Künstlerin auch das "Videoschattenspiel" Remembering Mad Meg (2007) wieder, eine Arbeit aus der Sammlung des Centre Pompidou. Die Grundgedanken, die ihrer Arbeit zugrunde liegen, werden hier anschaulich: Utopien, Dystopien, ihre Sicht auf Indien und die Stellung von Frauen in der Welt.

A pioneering artist in film, photography, video art and performance, Indian artist Nalini Malani is a transition figure between the modern and contemporary art of her country. Her work, which criticizes the political situation in India, is based not only on an iconography typical of the subcontinents culture, but also on Western artistic and literary tradition. The Centre Pompidou is staging Frances first retrospective of the Indian artist Nalini Malani. In the exhibition as well as the corresponding catalogue, the artist presents works from 1969-2017, covering almost five decades of her oeuvre. On this occasion, she also reactivates a spectacular work from the museums collections: the video shadow theatre Remembering Mad Meg (2007). Through this circuit Nalini Malani evokes the concepts underlying her work: utopias, dystopia, and her vision of India and the position of women throughout the world.
