This richly illustrated volume depicts the development of parliamentary democracy in Germany from its beginnings in St Pauls Church, Frankfurt, in 1848 through the failure of the WeimarRepublic, the new beginning after the Second World War, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the transfer of the Bundestag from Bonn to Berlin to the present day.

The historical chapters are supplemented by a detailed portrayal of todays Parliament, the German Bundestag, in which its functions, organisation and democratic decision-making processes are comprehensively explained. One of the main centres of German democracy is the Reichstag Building, and the history of its construction is described with the aid of numerous contemporary photographs.

This informative volume is rounded off with a walk through the modern parliamentary and governmental quarter, which symbolically overcomes the division of Germany by forging an architectural link between the former East and West Berlin.
