The academic job market becomes more and more competitive in accounting discipline nowadays, and it is difficult for an accounting PhD student to get a decent job placement at a reputable institution. The objective of this study is to examine how to improve academic job placements for an accounting PhD program. To address this question, I explore four important specific issues. First, given the increased amount of applications for accounting PhD program over years, how to screen out and admit the most academically promising students? Second, what determine an accounting PhD student´s academic job placement? Third, how to help our accounting PhD students to build up strong academic credentials during their PhD studies, such that they will be competitive enough in the job market upon graduation? Fourth, what are the optimal job search strategies the accounting PhD students should adopt at their graduation year? Overall, this study offers insights into the ways of improving academic job placements for an accounting PhD program.
