Mit seinem posthum publizierten Spätwerk, der Ästhetischen Theorie (1970), hat Theodor W. Adorno die letzte Ästhetik der Moderne vorgelegt, die zugleich mehr ist als eine philosophische Ästhetik: Reflexion über die gesellschaftliche Möglichkeit respektive Unmöglichkeit von Kunst nach Auschwitz. Anlässlich des 50. Jahrestags der Erstveröffentlichung widmet sich dieser Band erstmals einer kommentierenden Auslegung der unabgeschlossenen Ästhetischen Theorie. Die Beiträge entfalten die begrifflichen und die materialen Bezüge der fragmentarischen Textblöcke. Adornos systematische Überlegungen werden in den sozialen, politischen und kulturellen Konstellationen um das Jahr 1968 situiert und nach ihrer Wirkungsgeschichte befragt. Anstatt schlicht ihre Historisierung abzuschließen, arbeiten die Kommentare die Triftigkeit vieler der ästhetisch-theoretischen Reflexionen für die Gegenwart heraus. Damit wendet sich der Band auch an diejenigen, die der Musik, der bildenden Kunst, der Literatur und der darstellenden Kunst mit philosophischem Interesse begegnen.
