The increasing requirements on combustion engines like reduced fuel consumption and emissions as well as good driveability need an improvement of combustion and exhaust treatment processes and their control. This can be achieved by a higher variability with an increase of actuators and sensors in addition to structural improvements. Modern engines have therefore many manipulation variables and sensors and a complex electronic management. The design of the many control and also diagnosis functions requires model-based methods taking into account mechatronic engineering principles.
The book treats physically-based as well as experimentally-gained engine models for gasoline and diesel engines and uses them for the design of the different control systems. The procedure from measurements, over simulations to calibration on test benches is systematically described and demonstrated. Not only the stationary but also the dynamic behaviour of engines is taken into account. Several new control principles are shown, like multivariable feedforward and feedback control based on nonlinear net models, combustion pressure and HCCI control. Many new results with signal and process model-based fault diagnosis show, how on-board fault diagnosis can be considerably improved.
The book is oriented to advanced students working in control, electrical, mechanical and mechatronic engineering and will also be useful for practising engineers in the field of engine and automotive engineering.

Rolf Isermann studied Mechanical Engineering and obtained the Dr.-Ing. degree in 1965 from the University of Stuttgart, Germany. In 1972 he became Professor in Control Engineering at the University of Stuttgart. From 1977-2006 he was Professor for Control Systems and Process Automation at the Institute of Automatic Control of the Darmstadt University of Technology. Since 2006 he is Professor emeritus and is head of the Research Group for Control Systems and Process Automation in the same institution. R. Isermann received the Dr. h.c. (honoris causa) from L´Université Libre de Bruxelles and from the Polytechnic University in Bucharest. In 1996 he was awarded by the "VDE-Ehrenring", and in 2007 by "VDI-Ehrenmitglied". The MIT Technology Review Magazine awarded him in 2003 to the Top Ten of Emerging Technologies in Mechatronics. In 2010 he received the Rufus Olde nburger Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME: highest scientific award for lifetime achievements).
